Reciprocity in Fundraising Texts, Give Before You Ask

$

The fastest way to kill a fundraising list is to make every message an ask. The antidote is reciprocity: give your supporters something of value before, and between, the times you ask for money.

Why reciprocity works

People are more willing to give to someone who has given to them first. In a campaign context, "giving" doesn't mean money, it means value: information they wanted, a genuine update, a thank-you, a sense of being an insider rather than an ATM. A list that receives value between asks answers the asks at a higher rate, because the relationship isn't purely transactional.

What you can give

A real update on the race or an issue the supporter cares about. Early or exclusive news, an endorsement, a debate result, a milestone, before it's public. A sincere thank-you after a deadline, with the result their gift helped produce. A useful resource: where to vote, how to volunteer, what a vote in the legislature actually did. None of this costs much to send, and all of it deposits into the relationship you'll later draw on.

The ratio

The exact mix varies, but the direction is constant: don't let asks dominate. Interleave value with your fundraising sequence so supporters hear from you as people worth listening to, not just a recurring bill. When you do ask, the ask should still be clear and specific, reciprocity earns you the ask, it doesn't replace it.

Thanking donors after they give, and reporting back what their money did, is the most under-used form of reciprocity, and the one that most reliably lifts the next ask.

Frequently asked questions

What does reciprocity mean in fundraising texts?

Giving supporters something of value, information, updates, thanks, access, before and between asks, so the relationship isn't purely transactional. People give more readily to someone who has given to them first.

What can a campaign "give" in a text?

Real updates, early or exclusive news, sincere thank-yous with the result the gift produced, and useful resources like voting or volunteering information. It's value, not money, and it costs little to send.

Does reciprocity replace the ask?

No. It earns the ask. Interleave value with your fundraising sequence, then make clear, specific asks; supporters who hear from you as more than a bill answer those asks at a higher rate.

Reciprocity shapes the whole donor relationship. See writing a fundraising text sequence for structure.
